During a lecture and video presentation, on July 11, 2009,
Mr. Hari Jones, curator of the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, Washington, DC, spoke of the role played by African Americans in underground intelligence gathering activities during the Civil War. Intelligence gathering (spying) by slaves contributed significantly to winning the war. Confederate officers often spoke freely of battle plans, and military strategy in the presence of slaves who were thought too “dumb” to understand. These slaves were, however, able to relate info in great detail to Union officials.
The Jubilee Trio in Concert
In concert at the North Church, Portsmouth NH the internationally acclaimed Jubilee Trio sang a program of African American spirituals, and traditional American Art Songs. The Trio was inspired by the Biblical tradition of regularly celebrating a Jubilee year during which all slaves were freed, amnesty was granted and wrongs were redressed.
For the last several years, SAACC’s major fundraiser has been it’s annual Dinner Dance and Silent Auction. Held each year in November, attendees are provided the experience of wonderful entertainment, stimulating conversation, vibrant dance, and exquisite culinary delights. In addition, there is an opportunity to acquire many unique items from the auction table.
A superb selection of South African Wines were available for sampling at a wine tasting hosted by SAACC in April 2010. New friends were made at this “low key” fundraiser which introduced many visitors to the Cultural Center for the first time.
A festive occasion that featured a diversity diversity of music, food, dance and art of various ethnic origins.
